Cornamaddy National School and Athlone Community College have been announced as the winners of the Arcadia Creative Climate Awards 2022.
The two schools took part in the Arcadia Creative Climate Awards 2022 in which primary schools across the Midlands had been tasked with coming up with ideas to help the environment and Secondary schools had been challenged to think what Athlone will look like in 2050 and what Arcadia Retail Park should do now to prepare for these environmental changes.
The Arcadia Creative Climate Awards project is being run in conjunction with the Cllr.Frankie Keena, Cathaoirleach of Westmeath County Council ‘Junior Mayor’ initiative, with its central theme of ‘giving young people a voice’
The winners of the awards were announced and nearly €3000 worth of spot prizes were given out to each of the schools. With the overall winners receiving and inaugural trophy, a €250 excursion, a €250 B&Q voucher and a €100 Jolly Boys Pizza voucher for their school.
The Primary School overall winners Econamaddy, Cornamaddy National School, showed a great knowledge and understanding of the environmental issues and challenges that they face in school and in their community today. They reduced the amount of single use plastic in their school, set up Eco-monitors in all the classrooms, raised awareness of the negative impact that both plastic and dumping can have on the environment and designed an eco-friendly thermal coffee cup for their school community.
The Secondary School overall winners ACC Climate Caretakers, Athlone Community College, had a vision for a greener more prosperous Athlone. They looked at Athlone and Arcadia and the challenges that they face and how they can combat issues such as flooding, transport and Athlone’s status.
